John F. Barnes Myofascial Release® is a gentle, hands-on approach that looks beyond symptoms to address the underlying restrictions within the body's fascial system - the connective tissue that surrounds and supports every muscle, bone, nerve, and organ. By using sustained pressure rather than force, it helps restore movement, improve function, and reduce pain so you can get back to the activities and moments that matter most.
-
Many treatments focus on where it hurts. John F. Barnes Myofascial Release® focuses on why it hurts. Rather than treating symptoms alone, Myofascial Release addresses restrictions within the body's fascial system that may be contributing to pain, stiffness, or limited movement. Every session is personalized because no two people, or their stories, are exactly alike. Our goal isn't just to help you feel better today, but to help you move more freely, function more fully, and create lasting change.

No two people experience pain or movement restrictions in exactly the same way. Every session is guided by your history, your body's response, and your goals. Treatment is never one-size-fits-all and evolves as your body changes throughout the healing process.
-
Your first visit begins with a conversation about your symptoms, health history, and goals so we can better understand your unique situation. From there, we'll complete a brief structural assessment to establish a baseline and identify patterns that may be contributing to your pain or movement limitations.
We'll then move into the hands-on portion of your session using the John F. Barnes Myofascial Release® approach. Because the fascial system connects the entire body, treatment may include areas beyond where you feel pain to address the underlying restrictions contributing to your symptoms.
Before you leave, we'll review what I found, answer any questions you may have, and discuss recommendations for moving forward.
-
John F. Barnes Myofascial Release® is gentle by design. Unlike traditional massage, treatment uses gentle, sustained pressure rather than forceful or aggressive techniques. Individual techniques are often held for 5 to 20 minutes, giving the fascial system time to soften and release naturally.
You may experience tenderness, passing pain, twitches, stretching, warmth, or unfamiliar sensations as restrictions begin to release. Some areas may feel intense, but treatment should never feel forced or overwhelming. We'll communicate throughout your session to make sure you're comfortable and adjust treatment as needed.
-
Myofascial Release is performed directly on the skin without lotion or oil, so clothing should allow comfortable access to the areas being treated. Because treatment may be performed lying down, sitting, or standing, shorts are preferred.
For men, treatment is performed without a shirt, wearing shorts. For women, shorts with a sports bra or tank top are recommended. This allows access to the areas being treated while maintaining your comfort and privacy.
For infants and young children, clothing recommendations will depend on their age and the areas being treated. If you're unsure what to wear, I'm happy to answer any questions before your visit.
-
There is no set number of sessions because every person and every situation is different. The number of sessions you may need depends on your history, the nature of your restrictions, your goals, and how your body responds to treatment.
When appropriate, scheduling sessions closer together can help build on the changes from one session to the next and may help move the process along more efficiently. As your body responds and progress is made, sessions can often be spaced further apart.
We'll reassess your progress along the way and adjust your treatment plan as needed. The goal is not to keep you coming indefinitely, but to help you make meaningful, lasting improvements in movement and function.

Fascia is a continuous web that runs throughout the body, connecting and surrounding everything from muscles and bones to nerves and organs. Because the fascial system is interconnected, a restriction in one area can affect movement and create tension somewhere else - sometimes causing pain in a place that seems completely unrelated to the original restriction.
That's why we don't always treat only where you hurt. During your evaluation and treatment, we'll look at the body as a whole to identify restrictions that may be contributing to your symptoms. By addressing the underlying restrictions - not just where it hurts—we can work toward more lasting improvements in movement and function.
